Is There a Cure?
Currently, there is no permanent fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva cure .
Main Treatment Approaches
1. Preventing Injury
- Avoid falls and physical trauma
- Avoid unnecessary surgeries and injections
- Reduce muscle strain
2. Medicines
- Pain relievers to reduce pain
- Anti-inflammatory drugs during flare-ups
- Corticosteroids may help reduce severe inflammation
3. Physical Support
- Gentle physiotherapy
- Mobility aids (wheelchair, supportive devices)
- Breathing support if chest movement becomes limited
4. Monitoring and Care
- Regular medical checkups
- Genetic counseling for families
- Early diagnosis to prevent complications
Important Note
Surgery to remove extra bone is usually avoided because it can trigger even more bone growth.
Treatment of FOP mainly focuses on preventing injury, reducing pain and inflammation, and improving quality of life because no cure exists yet.
Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva Diagnosis
FOP is usually diagnosed based on a combination of clinical features, imaging findings, and genetic testing. Early and accurate diagnosis is very important because some medical procedures can worsen the condition
1) Melformed great toe and progressiove ossification
2) Genetic testing of ACVR1 mutation detect
3) X-ray / CT for abnormal bone formation detect

Main Complications
- Severe disability
- Ankylosis
- Malnutrition
- Respiratory failure
- Pneumonia
Surgical Complication
Surgery or injury may trigger:
- rapid new bone formation
- worsening of the disease
The major complications of FOP are progressive disability, joint fusion, and breathing difficulties caused by abnormal bone formation.
Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva Management
As this is a rare case , patient pass throw mental trauma and excruciating pain . So mental pain should be kept away as much as possible. Beside intra muscular ( IM) injection,unnecessary surgery, biopsy,rough physiotherapy should be avoided.
For pain control NSAIDs , analgesics can be given . Besides we can provide Gentle physiotherapy for Aggressive stretching .
